The Anand Lok residence is an ancestral property residing in the lush green of South Delhi, India. The existing house consisted of a ground floor ample vegetation. The clients-2 brothers wanted to modify the house as per their current day requirement. The intervention began with keeping in mind the client’s keen interest in sustainability. Design schemes were developed to create a space that turns the house inside out, in order to provide the client with a somber micro-climate. Usage of sustainable material such as natural Indian stones, exposed brick, and concrete was used to reduce the operational and maintenance cost. The house was divided into a public floor and a private floor. The lower floor of the duplex entailed bedrooms for family and guests, a gym and a study. The public floor consists of a formal family lounge, anteroom, formal dining room, and the kitchen. However, the need to co-joint the two floors was apparent and given the long expanse of the house, 2 internal courtyards were added, one housing a sculptural staircase and the other an internal balcony and a family living room. Old school terrazzo flooring and lime plaster walls are the prominent players in the interiors of the house. The exterior brickwork is reflected in the house in subtle proportions as not to overwhelm the user but provide a visual semblance of the house. Foliage and ceramic screens are used in the balcony for privacy from the neighboring building. The architecture is not only to meet the functional and aesthetic concerns but also as a means to connect people to people and people to nature.
